Improve Gum Health with Non-surgical Deep Teeth Cleaning

Did you know that gum disease is the number one cause of tooth loss in adults? Luckily, you don’t have to be part of these statistics. Deep teeth cleaning in Houston, Texas, is a non-surgical and highly effective method for treating gum disease. At West University Dental Professionals, Leila Ann Suki, DDS, we gently perform deep cleanings to remove harmful buildup and help stop periodontal disease in its tracks.

What is deep teeth cleaning?

Untreated gum disease can cause receding gums and tooth loss. Deep teeth cleaning is a two-step procedure that dislodges tartar (hardened plaque) from the deep pockets, where your toothbrush and dental floss can’t reach.

Deep teeth cleaning involves:

  • Scaling: The dentist or dental hygienist uses special tools to remove tartar and bacterial toxins from the deep pockets. They can use an ultrasonic scaler or manual instruments to break down hardened irritants.
  • Root planing: Root planing smooths the tooth roots, discouraging bacterial buildup while encouraging the gums to heal and reattach.

Deep teeth cleaning is more extensive than standard dental cleanings. We use local anesthesia to maximize your comfort, and treatment may require more than one visit, depending on the severity of your infection. Dr. Leila Suki may also complement deep teeth cleaning with Perio Protect trays, or other antibacterial medicaments,  to keep the infection under control.

What can I expect after deep teeth cleaning?

After treatment, you may experience mild pain and sensitivity. We’ll provide aftercare tips to ensure you heal quickly and comfortably. Post-op care covers medications, diet, oral hygiene, and activity levels. Patients recover within a few days, though their gums may take several weeks to heal fully. After treatment, you need periodontal maintenance cleanings every 3-4 months to prevent relapse.

What are the signs that I need deep teeth cleaning?

You may need a periodontal cleaning if you have one or a combination of the following signs.

  • Receding gums or your teeth looking longer than usual
  • Periodontal pockets deeper than 3mm
  • Red, swollen, or tender gums
  • Persistent bad breath (halitosis)
  • Visible tartar buildup beneath the gums
  • Loose teeth

The above signs and symptoms are just part of the diagnosis. Dr. Suki will use a periodontal probe (to measure gum pockets) and X-rays, before recommending deep cleaning.

What are the benefits of deep teeth cleaning?

Scaling and root planing (SRP) offers several benefits, including:

  • Stops gum disease progression: Deep cleaning removes harmful bacteria and buildup that cause gum disease. This helps prevent the infection from worsening.
  • Prevents tooth loss: Treating gum disease early protects the bone and tissues that hold your teeth in place.
  • Freshens breath: Bacteria trapped under the gums often cause bad breath. Removing them leaves your mouth feeling cleaner and fresher.
  • Improves overall health: Healthy gums are linked to a healthy heart and body. Treating gum disease supports more than just your smile.
  • Enhances your smile’s appearance: Healthier gums look firmer and pinker, making your smile appear cleaner and more attractive.
